CELEBRATION OF THE IMO WORLD MARITIME DAY PARALLEL EVENT IN GREECE (ATHENS AND GALAXIDI)
(19 to 21 September 2008)
The IMO Council having accepted, at its twenty-fourth extraordinary session in November 2007, the offer of the Government of Greece to host the 2008 World Maritime Day "parallel" event, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization and the Minister of Mercantile Marine, Aegean Sea and Island Policy of Greece are pleased to announce that celebrations will be held in Athens on 19 September and in Galaxidi on 20 September 2008.
The Athens event will be held at the Evgenidio Foundation building on Friday, 19 September 2008, and will focus on this year´s theme "IMO: 60 years in the service of shipping". It will comprise:
a.m.: Speeches on the year´s theme delivered by Members of the Greek Government, the Secretary-General, the Chairman of the IMO Council, the Heads of international shipping organizations, ITF, the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, the Union of Greek Shipowners and the General Secretary of the Panhellenic Seamen´s Federation; and
p.m.: A round table discussion involving the Chairmen of all IMO Committees (on Maritime Safety, Legal, Marine Environment Protection, Technical Co-operation and Facilitation) and a United States Coast Guard representative, followed by a question/answer period.
The second event will take place at Galaxidi* (where participants will be transferred by sea or land courtesy of the organizers) on Saturday, 20 September 2008. It will, in the main, consist of the Unveiling of the International Memorial to the Wife of the Seafarer ceremony to be performed by His Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic.
For Sunday, 21 September 2008, a tour of the Galaxidi Maritime Museum is planned to be followed by a sightseeing tour of, and lunch at, Delphi (courtesy of the Hellenic Tourism Organization) before the participants are transferred back to Athens.
